If you’ve taken the time and spent the money to have your car’s exterior refinished, the last thing you want is to do something to compromise the job. Here’s what you need to know to keep the paint looking fresh for as long as possible:
1. If you have a garage, take advantage of the protection it can offer. Parking a car outside can expose it to nature, which can eat away at the body. Bird poop can really do a number on paint, too. In the event of an issue, be sure to wash it with soap and water. This is especially important for the first few days.
2. Avoid going through a commercial car wash for the first 30 days after painting. Instead, wash it by hand. Do not polish or wax your car for 90 days after painting. It is recommended to use non-abrasive wax or polish formulated for cars every three to four months.
3. Avoid placing any object on your car hood or trunk lid. This is the easiest way to end up with a scratch.
4. Be pro-active. Try to park as far away from other cars when parking in a lot. Avoid leaving your car in the sun for days on end, as this can cause the paint to fade.
5. Be careful when pumping gas. If you do happen to spill gas by accident, the best solution is to grab a bottle of instant detailer and a good, clean microfiber cloth and clean up the gasoline before it does any harm.
6. Try to avoid gravel roads. Chipping the finish is easily done during the first 30 days.
